Wine Tax Changes
A tax reform Congress passed may affect how wine is taxed, and subsequently, how accurate the label will be in telling you how much alcohol they contain. The current law sets a dividing line at 14% alcohol by volume. Wines with less are taxed less and can be up to 1.5% inaccurate as long as under 14%. Wines 14-16% are taxed higher and can be 1% off. The new laws would tax all wines up to 16% the same, meaning if you prefer a lower alcohol wine you may be mislead by an inaccurate label and get a headier beverage than you wanted. Time will tell what changes are made!
