New Bordeaux Varieties
In an effort to adapt to climate change, Bordeaux has now approved seven new varieties for planting in the famed appellation. It was a timely decision given the recent heatwave. The red varieties approved are Arinarnoa, Touriga Nacional, Marselan and Castets. Alvarinho, Petit Manseng and Liliorila are the white varieties now permitted. These grapes can make up a maximum of 5% of the vineyard and 10% of a finished wine. Many in the region say that this is only the beginning of the changes needed to continue to produce fine wine in the face of climate change.
