Learning Why Your Luxury Wine is a Luxury

"Luxury" conjures up images of wealth and grandeur, but there is more than that to what makes a "luxury" wine just that. The price is a factor, certainly, but that is only one clue. A wine that is priced, say, $60 may be entry level wine for one producer and the top price point for another. It takes some research to learn these nuances. Other factors at play? "Quality" may seem like an obvious attribute of luxury wine, but there are many facets of quality to consider. "Quality" may refer to vineyard prestige, winemaker fame, or winemaking technology, just to name a few sides of factor.

How much of the wine exists in the world will also influence just how luxurious the wine is. The less there is available to buy, the more cherished a sought-after bottle becomes, and the greater the reward in consuming wine that few will be able to enjoy in their lifetime. The history of the wine is also an indicator of luxury. Wine from estates that have been around for centuries enjoy a certain glow that new wineries haven't had time to acquire. The practice of being organic, biodynamic or sustainable also connotes luxury to some. In the end, it is your decision of whether a wine is a luxury to you or not, but these are some of the factors to consider.
