Italian Gems
The interest in Italy is ever growing, and while the price may be too, it still is a bargain for those who buy fine wine, compared to top-scoring wines from France. Wine-Searcher aggregated and analyzed critics' scores to come up with a list of the top ten wines from Italy. Naturally, the lion's share come from the Piedmont and Tuscany. The glory of Barolo, Barbaresco and Brunello di Montepulciano and Super Tuscans cannot be denied. However the list also boasts two Vin Santos, a dessert wine, and one wine from Friuli made of the Refosco grape!
Going back to the big B's, who produced the best Barolos and Barbarescos? Giacomo Conterno's Riserva from Monfortino was the top Barolo while the Gaja Sori San Lorenzo Langhe-Barbaresco rated just below it. Next came an IGT wine in the name of Masseto Toscana. Familiar stalwarts like Solaia and Sassicaia also showed up. As for the aforementioned Friuli offering, the wine was Miani Calvari Refosco Colli Orientali del Friuli. With competitive prices, we recommend trying them all!
