Is The 1855 Bordeaux Classification Still Relevant Today?
The 1855 Classification was ordered by Napoleon III for the Paris Exposition. Placement was determined by what prices the chateaux sold their goods for. Despite being 160 years old, the Cru Classé wines are still held in the highest regard by consumers of wine wine and critics alike. A look at how relevant the rating actually is, is long due. While most maintain that the First Growths fight to deserve their title, some of the lower Growths, such as Fifth Growth Château Lynch-Bages contend that they have long been making wine that deserves a higher ranking. One thing many agree on is the recent improvement over all for the region.
