Interview With the Winemaker

by Westgarth Wines April 03, 2019

Eric Kohler is the technical director of Château Lafite Rothschild, a First Growth in Bordeaux and first name in fine red wine. In an interview with Wine-Searcher he sat down to detail exactly what his job entails. He discusses his start in wine at Château Poujeaux and Château Rieussec, how his work encompasses not just winemaking but also sharing his knowledge with journalists and clients and, of course, the details of wine he makes. The blend of Lafite in the last ten years has been at least 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6-10% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot and occasionally a little Cabernet Franc. Kohler shares his thoughts on the last few vintages, and his biggest challenge—understanding how to work with them!
