Getting to Know Paul Hobbs

by Westgarth Wines August 18, 2020

In an article about Paul Hobbs it is revealed that his original dream of being a doctor got waylaid by a glass of wine. Many wine professionals can say that, but perhaps the caliber of wine Hobbs went on to create and consult on is to due in part to the wine in his life-changing cup: 1962 Chateau d’Yquem. How many can boast a Bordeaux ‘premier cru superieur’ as their game changer? His apprenticeship at Mondavi whilst at UC Davis let him cut his teeth with a true California cult wine by the name of Opus One. From there he has not sat still, traveling the world, consulting renowned wines such as Catena Zapata, the winery that helped Malbec become Argentina’s flagship grape, as well as Spain and Armenia. His latest venture is back in the United States albeit on the east coast. His 2019 Finger Lakes Riesling has set to be released but if his previous wines are predictors, then have high hopes.
