Getting to Know Bordeaux

When you see “Bordeaux” on a bottle you probably know it comes from France. But how deep does your knowledge run? You might want to bone up on a few facts if you buy fine wine. To start, until a couple of weeks ago there were twelve varieties allowed to make wine. New ones were recently approved, but you should focus on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. It follows that most Bordeaux wines are blends. From there you can get to know the Left Bank blends from the Right Bank. Terroir is important to the winemakers here, and this is a good region to look to if you are interested in wineries that practice organic viticulture.
