Champagne Changes

Champagne Changes

by Westgarth Wines January 28, 2020

Champagne sales by volume are decreasing, but ultra-premium sales figures are growing. This year less than 300 million bottles will be sold but sales will be over five million euros, according to the Comité Champagne (CIVC). This decrease in volume yet rise in sales figures is likely due to those who invest in fine wine seeking out more prestige cuvées. Between 2017 and 2018 those sales have risen 5 percent. The LVMH umbrella handles Moët & Chandon, Ruinart, Dom Pérignon, Krug, Mercier and Veuve Cliquot making them perhaps the biggest player on the prestige cuvée market. They are also the biggest grape buyer in the area and so exert a great deal of influence on the Champagne region. Read more on what the LVMH group has to do with changes in the region here.
