The Bordeaux Best

The Bordeaux Best

by Westgarth Wines November 15, 2019

One thinks of the famed First Growths when they think of the best in Bordeaux, but does an in-depth study that aggregates critics' scores show this to be true? WineSearcher's year end analysis of top-scoring Bordeaux does include those famed five chateaux, but not in the order you would expect. In fact, the top-scorer of the bunch was Chateau d'Yquem, a dessert wine! The Right Bank made a showing next, with the most expensive of all, the Pomerol appellation's sought after Petrus. Not until then does on of the First Growths, Chateau Haut Brion, make it's was as third on the list in rating--and it is a bargain by comparison! Heavyweights Margaux, Mouton Rothschild, Latour and Lafite Rothschild also make showings, and the list is rounded out by two "St-Emilion Premier Grand Classé 'A' selections, as well as Pomerol's Chateau Lafleur.

Bordeaux still remains a relatively good value for quality, and unique for it's orderly rankings and systems. WineSearcher points out that it remains "a benchmark for everyone else". Time to raise a glass, and decide for yourself!
