Behind every fine wine is a fine winemaker. Behind the Super Tuscan “Ornellaia” is the super winemaker Axel Heinz. How did this Munich-born man become the force behind an Italian wine based on a French variety? Wine-Searcher sat down with Heinz to get his story, which include an education in Bordeaux—a logical stepping stone to being in charge of “Ornellaia” which is typically 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petite Verdot.
