A Bandol Legend Dies
Lucie “Lulu” Peyraud, matriarch of Domaine Tempier, passed away at the age of 102 on October 7th. She received the Domaine, including the vineyards, farm, and cellars as a wedding gift in 1936. The lineage of the Domaine is distinctly matriarchal as it was Peyraud’s grandmother, Léonie Tempier who developed the property, which had been in the family since 1834.Peyraud knew the potential of the wines she tasted, and set out to put Bandol, a small subregion of Provence, on the map. Not only did she believe in the wine but also she believed in the Provençal lifestyle, from the food she became legendary for cooking to her hospitality. Thanks to the effort of Lulu and her husband Lucien, the Bandol region achieved an AOC status in 1941, and Domaine Tempier remains a hallmark of the region.
Peyraud credited daily swing-set time and drinking red wine and Champagne as her secrets to a long life. We suggest you open a bottle of Domaine Tempier, find a playground, and toast to one of wine’s greatest.
